The Tatts Finke Desert race is one of most physically demanding off road motor vehicle races in the world. The 3 day event sees competitors across many bodies of motor tackle over 450km’s of dry desert country in the Australian outback.

To say this race is for the “mad” would be an understatement.

Get Fit: Getting in touch with a local Personal Trainer willing to learn and understand the physical demands of this race will help you immensely with your physical performance and recovery post-race. Increasing your physical fitness will also help with the control and the manual handling or your bike as you sail over bumps and whoops.

Stay Hydrated: Alice Springs is hot and dry, so expect to sweat, especially when you are riding a vehicle generating huge amounts of heat itself.  Without proper hydration your body and mind cannot perform at its best. It is critical that you stay hydrated throughout this race, which will ensure your body is kept in prime condition to make fast and precise decisions when attacking lines and hitting whoops. Staying hydrated with greatly decrease your chances of developing a heat related illness during the race such as: Heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Fuel well: Consider your body a bike, if your bike is low on fuel, it will not perform as good as it would on a full tank? Correct? This is the exact same principle when considering your body and how you preform on the days. So without telling your what you should and shouldn’t eat, considering consulting a Nutritionist/ Dietician that specialise in endurance based performance to better address your needs as an athlete.
